Dog Training Classes

At Augusta Dog Training and Doggy Daycare, we proudly offer a variety of dog training classes in Minnesota depending on your dog’s age and experience. Classes are one hour in duration and meet once a week for six weeks. Enroll online or stop in at our Long Lake location and complete the enrollment form. Enrollment closes on the Wednesday prior to the start of the session.

We offer Obedience, Agility, Canine Good Citizen, and Therapy Dog Classes. Class size is limited to ensure that learning is optimized.

Puppy Kindergarten

Designed for puppies 8-20 weeks of age and small dog breeds who have not received any formal training.

Course Details:

  • Introduction of obedience commands: sit, down, leash walking, come when called
  • Skills are taught using age-appropriate techniques
  • Confidence-building exercises using puppy-friendly agility equipment
  • Impulse control exercises to create a confident yet composed puppy
  • Classes meet once a week for six weeks
  • Gear needed: a six-foot leash and treats
  • Please wear athletic-type shoes
  • Retractable leashes are not allowed

Family Dog 1 / Basic Obedience

Eligibility:

  • Open to dogs over five months of age or older

Course Details:

  • Introduction to basic obedience skills
  • Skills taught include controlled leash walking, sit, down, wait at doorways, come when called (recall), and introduction of Go to Mat
  • Commands are taught in a fun, pet-friendly manner and gently enforced to ensure reliable performance
  • Additional skills taught at the instructor’s discretion
  • Class meets for one hour per week for six weeks
  • Gear needed: six-foot leash, treats, 30-foot cord for recall. Harnesses and retractable leashes are not allowed
  • Please wear athletic-type shoes

Family Dog 2 / Intermediate Obedience

  • Prerequisite: Family Dog 1
  • Emphasis on reliable performance with one command response
  • Introduction to off-leash work
  • Preparation class for Canine Good Citizen Certification and Therapy Dog Certification
  • Open to dogs who have completed a basic obedience class or Augusta’s In-Home Good Manners course
  • Emphasis on reliable performance with one command response
  • Introduction to off-leash work

  • Gear needed: six-foot leash, treats, 30-foot chord for recall. Harnesses are not allowed; please wear athletic-type shoes
  • Class meets for one hour per week for six weeks

Scent Work

Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Classes follow the same format as our obedience training classes. They are six weeks in duration, meeting once per week for one hour.

Class is limited to six dog handler teams.

Agility

Open to dogs eight months or older. The Introduction to Agility class introduces dogs and owners to the action-packed sport of Agility dog training. You and your dog will have fun and build teamwork by learning to navigate tunnels, tires, jumps, and A-frames. Extra emphasis is placed on learning how to navigate the obstacles safely and the equipment height is adjusted for beginners. We also teach training games to build motivation and teamwork. Prerequisite: Family Dog 1

Rally Dog

Prerequisite: Family Dog 2, CGC title, or test with a class instructor prior to registration. Dogs should know how to heel on a loose leash, stay in sit and down positions, and come on command.

Therapy Dog

The Therapy Dog class will prepare dog/handler teams with the skills necessary to pursue Pet Partners’ registration for Animal Assisted Activities. Class will cover an overview of Pet Partners rules and regulations and expose teams to equipment and situations encountered on therapy visits.

Prerequisites:

  • Canine Good Citizen Certification.
  • Family Dog 2, CGC title, or test in with a class instructor prior to registration.
  • Dogs should heel on a loose leash, stay in sit and down positions, and come on command.

Class with Kathryn

This class is offered in a drop-in format and is one hour in duration.

Kathryn Newman, the owner of Augusta, will be conducting drop-in classes for advanced dogs on Tuesdays at 1:00 pm.

The emphasis of this dog training class will be proofing and polishing for intermediate to advanced dogs. Its design will be very similar to advanced classes held in the late 1970’s – 1980’s in which upper-level competition dogs (Open and Utility) are training alongside intermediate dogs. The overall emphasis is reliability and consistency of performance. Exercises will be presented and integrated for dogs who are on track for Canine Good Citizen, Therapy Dog, or Competition Obedience.

Prerequisites include:

  • Graduation from Augusta Family Dog 2
  • Completion of Augusta’s Good Manners In-home Course
  • Augusta Board and Train
  • Dogs on an AKC or UKC Competition path or graduation from an advanced dog training obedience course.
